Cooperating Teacher Orientation

The Oregon Preservice Education Network (OPEN), formerly known as the Metro Area Preservice Partnership (MAPP), collectively offers several opportunities to attend Cooperating Educator Orientation. Please attend the session most convenient to you. The orientation will provide helpful ideas for welcoming your candidates and supporting them in becoming the best educators as possible for our K-12 students.

Senate Bill 83 states that clinical experience must be supervised by a cooperating teacher who is “trained to supervise the applicant during the applicant’s supervised clinical practice experience”, thus attendance at an OPEN Orientation session is mandatory. With the renewed emphasis on the importance of learning opportunities presented during the field-based portions of teacher preparation programs, it is essential for candidates to be mentored by highly qualified cooperating teachers, including having a developed specialized skill set in mentoring adults, as well as how to facilitate feedback, elicit reflection, communicate effectively, and build trust and rapport with your candidate.

Once you attend one OPEN Orientation session, you don’t need to attend again if you host another candidate in the future.

Please note that the intention of these sessions is not to provide logistical information about the candidates (schedules, deadlines, timeline for when things are due) since Cooperating Teachers hosting candidates from a variety of universities will be present at each session.
