Using Videos to Enhance Clinical Learning: In the Classroom and Beyond

| 0

Movies aren’t just for Hollywood anymore.  At any level, basic videos can be used to engage students and enhance learning.  This presentation gives three examples of the use of videos in learning, and demonstrates how easily this tool can be added to any teaching setting.

Purpose:  The purpose of this presentation is to disseminate information regarding the use of video technology in the classroom and in public learning forums.

Methods:  Simple videos, created on both commercially available cameras and cell phone cameras, were used to better express content in classroom, clinic, and public learning forums.  Three examples of this application will be quickly explored, including some outcomes of these applications. Finally, we will provide a brief overview of content creation techniques, to demonstrate how quick and easy this tool can be.

Implications: Brief videos can make learning materials accessible for multiple learning styles. As demonstrated in the presentation, the creation of videos does not have to be a daunting or time-consuming task.  The ability for students to view the videos multiple times allows for reinforcing of materials and gives the students control and ownership in the learning process. In a world of Tik-Tok, Snapchat, Youtube, and Instragram, brief videos “speak” to the modern student.  Through use of a relevant medium, not only is the information more engaging, but the teacher or faculty gains credibility as a lifelong learner, themselves. Then the world is just a better place.
