Capstone

Capstone Summary

I completed my capstone project at Youth Progress Association with the program called the College and Career Attainment Program. This program provides supportive services for youth transitioning out of the juvenile justice system. During my time at youth progress, I completed a needs assessment to assess potential contributions that OT could lend. I worked closely with staff to identify 3 main elements of need: increased transition resources post program, co-regulation strategies for staff, and a trauma informed care toolkit for incoming staff and volunteers.

Abstract for Poster Presentation:

Youth transitioning out of the juvenile justice system have likely experienced trauma within the system and are generally at higher risk for traumatic experiences. Trauma may negatively impact functioning in daily life in a variety of ways. Occupational therapy has potential to mitigate these effects and bolster resilience for this population from a trauma-informed lens. This occupational therapy doctorate (OTD) capstone presentation explores the role of occupational therapy within a juvenile transitional support program to facilitate trauma-informed and safe experiences for youth.
