This project was initiated by my colleague Noah Rhee (University of Missouri-Kansas City) and involved the application of numerical methods to a celestial mechanics problem. Using a novel application of two numerical rootfinding methods, we articulated a computational method for determining minimum distance between two coplaner bodies orbiting the sun. A paper on this solution appeared in the journal Applied Mathematics and Computation in 2014. Future work could involve the application of this method to the more general case that removes the coplaner assumption and/or accounts for the gravitational attraction between the objects.
